Outreach to migrant workers in the rural county south of the SF Bay area
English Class: In the Fall of 2007, Marta began a popular English class for mothers at a local income qualifying preschool. The majority of these mothers do not speak English very well. This class offered an encouraging environment to practice everyday exchanges in English such as giving directions, making introductions and asking for information.
Dual Immersion Kindergarten: Alex assists twice weekly in this Spanish classroom at a local public school. This has been a great help to the school. The teacher has been deeply committed to the immigrant population of the county and is able to assist in this endeavor.
Spanish Language Training: Much of Alex's time in the year of 2007 has been in Spanish language study. Just as in any mission overseas, language acquistion is of major importance in effectively serving in another culture. We are working in California, but the population we serve primarily speaks Spanish. Just as when one moves overseas and spends the first years in language study, so Alex has focused his efforts this year. His studies includes college level classes, various tape programs, conversation practice, and a week of intensive study and homestay in Ensenada, Mexico.
Overview: There are many opportunities to serve in this county. As we seek out local pastors, health workers, and other ministries, we continually see new opportunities to get involved. There are so many places that want help, we could easily be overwhelmed with responsibility overnight. However, we sense this is a time to keep seeking, exploring, and serving in the situations outlined above-all waiting for God to show us how, where, and when He wants to focus our efforts.
